Smallholder Organic Farming: An Entrepreneurial Strategy in Harmony with Nature

Abstract

The paper examines the relationship between smallholder organic farming and entrepreneurship taking into account the environmental conservation approach of organic farming and the economic enhancement features of entrepreneurship. Further, it intends to determine through qualitative analysis using case studies how smallholder organic farming can be planned and the competencies needed by an organic farmer when venturing into an organic farm enterprise.

Dina Cartagena Magnaye, Assistant Professor and Program Chair/Licensed Environmental Planner, School of Urban and Regional Planning, University of the Philippines Diliman, Philippines

Dr. Dina Cartagena Magnaye is currently Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning (UP SURP) and Chair of the Estate Planning Cluster. She is a licensed environmental planner. She finished her doctoral degree in Urban and Regional Planning at the UP SURP. She took her masteral and baccalaureate degree in Agricultural Economics (Major: Marketing and Minor: Policy) and Agricultural Business, respectively, from the University of the Philippines Los Banos.

Dr. Magnaye is also an Affiliate Assistant Professor of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU). She handles courses in Diploma in Land Use Planning. Further, she is the Chair of the Diploma in and Master of Land Valuation and Management Program of the UPOU.

For 12 years, Dr. Magnaye worked with various local and national organizations such as Asian Development Bank, World Bank, USAID, AusAID, among others.She has been engaged in research and technical assistance on agriculture and development for 20 years, and in development planning for 12 years. Her fields of expertise include rural development, local economic development planning, financial and economic analysis, feasibility study preparation, project development and management, business plan preparation and industry analysis, as well as capability building.
